Do Reciprocal Links Work To Increase My Page Rank?

Reciprocal links work like this. You will put your link on someone else’s website and they will be able to list their website on yours. It is a trade off. But, there has been a lot of controversy about these links. Do they work to help improve your page rank in search engines? Do they hurt your page rank? Should you bother investing in them? To answer these questions, take a moment to consider both sides of the coin. The bottom line, to most webmasters, is that they are capable of working for you.Why They May Not Be GoodWhen reciprocal links first began to be used, it was a trade off between one webmaster and another.

If you were in the home decorating business, for example, it would be beneficial to work with and have a link to a company that provides windows. You both would benefit. When the webmasters did this, they found that their websites did in fact rank better. In fact, it worked so well that they went out and sought more and more of them.There in lies the problem. Instead of working with other website owners to develop a relationship and create a reciprocal link that benefited both parties, many website developers found that they could buy these links instead. Now, they did not have to go to the trouble of luring in those that they would like to have links from but they could just buy them. Okay, this is not so bad right? The problem was that people were buying and using thousands of reciprocal links on their website.


This is completely unnatural and it just didn’t work well for them.But, Why?The search engines soon became wise to this scheme of getting your website to rank well. They developed programs that would spot this problem and in fact people that used this large amount of reciprocal links, in this fashion, were ranked WORSE! They would spend top dollar to get these links from companies that were all too willing to sell them and would end up well back into the search pages.So, Now What?Keeping these things in mind, you need to consider wisely if you should in fact use reciprocal links for the websites that you put up.

In most cases, if you take the time to work at getting reciprocal links from qualified webmasters instead of buying large amounts of them, you are more capable of securing a sound method for increasing your page rank. If you decide to purchase hundreds of them and slap them on your website quickly, you will face a worst case scenario of lowering your page rank.Keep in mind as well that one of the best ways to increase traffic to your web page with links is to use one way links. You can get these by using article directory sites. There may not be a sure fire way to take a brand new site and get it as number one in the search engines, you can gain some movement upwards if you use links properly.

Turning Your Forum Signatures Into Cash

There are thousands and thousands of message boards on the internet. That's a lot of potential people who may be interested in your products or services. It also serves as a quick and easy way to get a lot of links pointing back at your site and can help get your pages spidered faster by the search engines.

I use a free tool, Board Tracker (http://www.boardtracker.com/), to help monitor posts on over 25,000 forums.

You can set up a free account there and then set up alerts. You can set it to alert you to any posts containing any keyword or phrases you like. Some examples would be, your board nicknames, your domain names, affiliate programs you work with, or whatever else you're interested in..

When someone makes a post and one of your alert keywords is found, you are emailed a link to the thread which you can follow and make a post. So as not to be a blatant board spammer, it is recommended that you register and make an introduction post on that board before responding to the thread. When responding, you should make your post helpful to the person in regards to answering any question they had without spamming your site/program, you are relying on your signature file here to draw their attention.

To make this task easier, I suggest utilizing Roboform (http://www.roboform.com/). Roboform makes it easy to handle all of your registering and logins.

Now, let's find some forums in which we can participate. Everyone has some knowledge or interest in something. Perhaps it is cars, interior design or something else. Whatever it is, you can be certain there are forums for that particular niche.

You can use your favorite search engine and search for...
forums
"message board"

or specifically for...
car message boards
interior design message boards

or search by the different types of forum software like...
"powered by PHPBB"
"powered by vbulletin"

Before registering with any message boards I would suggest that you setup a yahoo or gmail account just for this purpose. It would also be a good idea to use this email for your boardtracker alerts as well.

Now you are ready to begin registering. I have created a new identity in Roboform to handle the registration for me. This includes my signature file as well. Before posting, make sure that you read the board rules so you are able to comply with those.

Once registered, make your introduction post. Basically you are just announcing your arrival and maybe saying a little something about yourself (roboform can do that too!), be sure to set your introduction thread to notify you of new posts so that you are able to respond as others welcome you.

Some things to keep in mind...

Who is your target audience and where will you find them? Are stay home moms likely to be found in Family & Parenting forums? Who is most likely to be participating at a car forum? A pet owners forum? etc..

Once you've located your target audience, target your signature to meet the needs of that audience. For example, if you were involved in a Family & Parenting forum, a signature aimed towards the mom who would like to earn money while being home for her children may be in order. If it were a Car or Electronics forum, maybe a signature promoting Free Satellite Dishes (these pay $50-$100 per install btw) would be more appropriate. The idea is to determine what the needs of any particular audience would be and finding a way to appeal to that.

Also, notice that the majority of forums offer a place for people to place advertising, usually under a category labeled something like, "opportunities", "recommendations", "spam allowed", etc.. Look for these and make use of those as well. Each of those is a free targeted link to your site or product.

Make sure that you are paying attention to your anchor text. Anchor text, in case you don't know, is the actual text that is linked. Choose good keywords for your anchor text that you would like to do well for in the search engines. Never link text such as "click here".

The most important thing is to make this a part of your daily schedule. Do it each and every day and shortly you will have thousands of free advertising links all over the internet!

Disclaimer: I am in no way endorsing blatant spamming! The method I've outlined above is more of a suggestion for yet another avenue of free marketing that should be used in a responsible and productive manner which will benefit the board owners, other board members as well as yourself.

The Power of Online Discussion Board Advertising

Posting messages on online discussion boards is a great way to
get free advertising. When you post a message include your
signature file at the end. Your signature file should be no more
than 5 to 6 lines. Include an attention-getting sentence why
they should visit your web site or e-mail your auto responder.

Some online discussion boards allow you to leave text and
graphic links at the end of your messages. You will get a better
click-through rate with links than just a normal signature file.

Below are three types of messages you could post to online
discussion boards:

1. Informative Comments
Post information that would be informative to the people who
participate on the discussion board. It could be an article or a
study you've completed.

2. Ask Questions
Post a question on the discussion board you would like answered.
This will give you a chance to meet other experts and it could
lead to a profitable joint venture.

3. Answer Questions
Post the answer to another person's question on the discussion
board. When you answer questions you will get known as an
expert on the subject.

Firstly, it must be pointed out that due to the nature of the PageRank system, increasing it will not be easy or quick.

Spend time identifying high PageRank sites/pages that you could obtain links from. If you don't have time get a professional search engine optimisation company to do it for you.

Where possible, make sure the links from other sites contain the search phrases (anchor text) you want your site to come up on.

For example, say you wanted your site to appear in search results for "discount pond supplies:

Poor example - where 'click here' would be the link to your site.

Good Example - where 'discount pond supplies' would be the link to your site.

These services have their own discussion lists, bulletin boards,
forums and more, where you can contact these subscribers and
make your case; using your signature line of course! Since almost
all the online services offer a free trial for 30 days you can
fish in their waters for FREE. If you dig up enough business the
